YOUNG people with learning difficulties have been enjoying life on the canal with Hemel Hempstead Canoe Club.
The 12 youngsters took part in a six-week rafting and canoeing course as part of Sport England’s Sportivate-funded initiative.
The project is a partnership between the Sportspace sports development team and Hertfordshire’s Special Needs Activities and Play.
SNAP provides good quality childcare and play experience for children and young people who have learning disabilities of varying severity.
Sam Brearey – a gold medallist in sailing in both the Fireball European and Inland National Championships 2010 – attended the first and the final sessions to encourage and motivate the young people.
He was also on hand to offer valuable tips and advice on paddling technique.
Sportspace sports development officer Daryl Carr believes the course was a big hit with everyone involved.
“Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” he said. “ It was a great chance for the young people from SNAP to try out a completely new sport.
“Some weeks they got a little wet from the rain and on a few occasions they got a total soaking from supervised dips in the canal!”
