Smith leaves for the Premiership, with McAnuff also off

Hemel Hempstead-born footballer Tommy Smith has sealed a move to Premiership club Portsmouth while Jobi McAnuff is heading to Reading.

Forward Smith, 29, has signed for Paul Hart's men for an undisclosed fee from Watford, thought to be in the region of 2million.

He had been linked with a move to Brendan Rodgers' Reading but a late bid from the Hampshire side came in earlier this week.

Smith's contract with the Vicarage Road club was due to expire in 11 months at which time he would have been able to leave for free.

Chairman Jimmy Russo said: "We had to take the financial implications into account as in January Tommy could agree a deal with another club for next Summer.

"Whilst we don't want to lose a player of his undoubted quality, the financial position we inherited is clear and we have to look after the future of the club.

"As a club we were adamant not to move from our Valuation of Tommy and we held firm in this."

Winger McAnuff, has, meanwhile, signed for Reading and former Watford boss Rodgers.

He, like Smith, has left for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old winger made more than 90 appearances for the club and scored five goals.

Watford have rejected a written transfer request from defender Mike Williamson, but revealed they have received an offer from an unnamed club for the defended.

The 25-year-old signed for the golden boys in January this year from Wycombe Wanderers, and since played 23 times and scored three goals.
