Sibling rivalry certainly came to the fore when Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club held their annual club captain elections this month.

Brothers Tom Sherriff and Matthew Sherriff both stood for boys’ club captain, while sisters Kira Doyle and Kelsey Doyle put themselves forward for the role of girls’ club captain.

And after the votes were cast by the club’s 250 members, Tom and Kira were announced as the winners, with Matt and Kelsey taking up positions as vice-captains.

All four of the swimmers involved in the elections are already very active within the club, giving up their time to coach the younger swimmers several times a week.

Tom and Kira have both achieved their ASA Level 1 Teachers’ certificate and work part-time for Sportspace while also studying for their A-levels.

Joan Keevill, Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club chairman said: “We were very intrigued when we heard that two sets of siblings were standing for election. We have never had this in our history.

“All four of the swimmers are a credit to the club, giving up their time to help develop our younger swimmers and being role models.

“Whilst they were rivals, the election was held in good spirits and it’s a great way for us to start our celebrations for our 100-year anniversary next year.”

In recognition of its centenary year, the club has announced that it will be extending its annual Birthday Open Meet from one to two days next year.

The meet will take place on October 19 and October 20, 2013.
