Teams battle it out for Wren hounours

Week ten of the Hemel Hempstead Table Tennis League season saw the teams battle it out in the second round of the Wren Cup and the first round of the Wren Plate.

The closest tie in the cup competition saw Crown & Sceptre A beat Flamstead C by just three points, while Northchurch A overcame Adeyfield C by a seven-point margin.

Other winners were Crown & Sceptre D and St Georges, with Crown & Sceptre B and Flamstead B awarded byes.

In the first round of the plate, meanwhile, KLCC I and Flamstead A both enjoyed good wins, Row and Northchurch I received walk-overs, and Crown & Sceptre I, Adeyfield A and Highfield had byes through to the quarter-finals.

Back in league action, Adeyfield I returned to the top of Division One with a 10-0 demolition of Flamstead A, with Dave Wackrill, Mike Boardman and Nigel Finn doing the damage.

Crown & Sceptre A had a narrow 6-4 victory over Flamstead I, with Ken Stonebridge achieving a maximum.

In Division Two, leaders Crown & Sceptre B recorded a comfortable 8-2 victory over McAlpine A, with Paul Bohknect winning each of his three games.

Second-placed Northchurch I kept up the pressure with a 10-0 thrashing of Highfield, as well as a 7-3 win against McAlpine A. Graham Perkins helped himself to a double maximum.

Elsewhere, KLCC I moved 12 points clear at the top of Division Three with 9-1 and 7-3 victories against Flamstead C and St Georges, respectively – Paul Hards bagging a double maximum.

KLCC then had a slight set-back as they drew 5-5 with Northchurch A, for whom Frank Manfield achieved a maximum.

Second-placed Adeyfield B had mixed results, with a resounding 10-0 victory over Crown & Sceptre D followed by a 6-4 loss to St Georges.

Flamstead C moved into third place with back-to-back wins over KLCC A and Northchurch A, with Phil Oswin and Tony Bourke both making a maximum.

Bob Saupan bagged a treble in Adeyfield C’s 7-3 triumph over Northchurch A, while Peter Watts and Alex Dukes also recorded maximums in a 7-3 victory for KLCC A over Crown & Sceptre D.
