Dacorum’s potential stars of the future are being offered a helping hand as they attempt to make it to the very top of their chosen sport.

Launched by Sportspace, the Aspiring Athletes scheme is designed to aid youngsters on their progression from county standard through to world class performance levels.

Through free membership of the Sportspace gym and swimming facilities, as well as tailored training sessions, it is hoped that the young athletes will be able to support their training and go on to achieve their full potential.

Sportspace currently supports 13 young athletes from Dacorum in a range of sports including ski racing, ladies’ football, basketball, hockey and disability athletics.

But it is not just elite athletes who are flourishing in the borough – youngsters throughout Dacorum appear to have been bitten by the fitness bug, with attendances at the new junior gym at Sportspace Hemel Hempstead up by 153 per cent in 12 months.

Junior Gymspace manager James Sexton said: “We have worked really hard over the past year to increase awareness of our dedicated junior gym and the benefits of physical activity for young people.

“It is brilliant that our attendances are so good and the message seems to be getting through.”
