Winners for third time in six years

A school team won a trophy for the third year in six – despite playing their second-choice goalkeeper.

Shotstopper Alex Bickerstaff was called into action for the first time in a year to help Cavendish U18 1st XI see off Verulam School from St Albans 3-1 at The County Ground, Letchworth.

He was called up after goalkeeper Gareth Jahn dislocated his shoulder while playing rugby, days before the final of the Hertfordshire School County Cup.

But his understudy's performance and goals from Emi Zavala, Matt Collier and Ollie Gurney sent Cavendish on their way to victory.

Coach Ian Sudbery said: "Nights like these are just so immensely rewarding.

"To see the team perform so well and to support each other throughout the season is a real source of pride to me.

"Alex always looked confident in goal and man of the match Daniel Sarginson controlled everything Verulam could throw at us."

Cavendish will look for more success when they defend their County

League title in four games' time.

Elsewhere, Berkhamsted Sports made two dramatic comebacks to reach the final of the Herts County Cup.

Berkhamsted were 2-0 down to Saracens, but two late goals hauled the home side level.

Saracens regained the lead in extra-time, before a goal from Colin Gower and a 116th minute thumping header from David Hay won the match.
