A Hollywood blockbuster with an A-list cast of recognisable faces including Kenneth Branagh and Keira Knightley also boasts an Abbots Langley local among its actors.

Action thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit hit cinemas on Friday as the fifth in the Jack Ryan film series based on the novels of American author Tom Clancy.

Alongside silver screen stalwarts is German-Russian actor Erich Redman as a Russian orthodox priest, whose sermon in the film contains a secret code which sets off a perilous chain of events on both sides of the Atlantic.

Erich, who was born in the Soviet Union, raised in Germany and now lives in Abbots Langley, also has acting credits in Academy Award-winning Saving Private Ryan and The Illusionist as well as critically acclaimed 2013 biopic Rush, about the rivalry between Formula One drivers Niki Lauda and James Hunt.

The villager, who can count Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks and Matt Damon among previous co-stars, said of his latest film’s actor and director Kenneth Branagh: “He was really lovely to work with – charming, courteous, respectful. You can tell that he is an actor himself and knows how to talk to actors. Like me, I don’t think he’s a natural ‘early riser’, but by mid-morning he is his usual charming, smiling self!”

Catch Erich in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit at Hemel Hempstead’s Empire Cinema. The film is dedicated to author Clancy, who died in October.
