No beehive but lots of glamour and great songs

TRANSPORT yourself back in time when Mari Wilson, who burst onto the music scene in the early eighties with her skyscraper beehive hairdo and bizarre sense of fashion, heads to Hemel’s Old Town Hall Theatre next week.

With her fully choreographed 12-piece band The Wilsations, and hit singles including Just What I’ve Always Wanted and Cry Me A River, Mari’s live shows were a real event - pure entertainment.

In the mid eighties after constant touring of the UK, Europe and United States, she reduced the size of her hairdo and her band, playing instead with a jazz quartet and building her reputation as a great live performer, with credits ranging from gigs at Ronnie Scott’s and the Royal Festival Hall, to jazz festivals alongside BB King and Ray Charles.

She’s also trodden the musical theatre boards with roles in Sweet Charity, Dusty The Musical, and in the West End musical Taboo with Boy George, and she’s written her own - The Love Thing, a one-woman musical which is currently being developed for stage.

In September 2007, marking the 25th Anniversary of Just What I Always Wanted’s appearance in the top ten, Warner Bros released Mari Wilson – The Platinum Collection and she toured the UK.

Mari brings her unique style of glamour and storytelling - and great songs - to Hemel Hempstead’s Old Town Hall Theatre on Saturday, March 5, 8pm.
