A slice of success for town cakemakers

There’s a sweet story behind these incredible cakes – yes, they are cakes, though they might not look like your average Victoria Sandwich.

Not one, but two Hemel Hempstead bakers picked up gold medals for their surprising sponge creations at an international convention in London’s ExCel Centre at the weekend.

Angie Laing, who runs the Grovehill-based Mother and Me cake company with daughter Becky, came second in her category and struck gold with her adventurous Indiana Jones-themed confection, while Hannah Glennerster from The Cake Illusionist, based in Sempill Road, also won a top prize for her wild tiger design.

Far from being a bitter bake-off, the two cake artists supported each other in the exhibition and have even worked together on their cakes in the past.

Angie, 54, said: “I started baking years ago when my children were young. When I started posting pictures of my cakes on Facebook the business grew from there and I have never looked back.

“It was amazing to do so well... I won’t be eating my creation – it will be kept on display for as long as it lasts.”
