POLICE believe thieves could have used bicycles that they had stolen as their getaway vehicles during a spree of car break-ins.

Eight cars were targeted in Tring last Tuesday night and on the same evening two bikes were snatched from a shed in Grove Road.

Tring Sergeant Adele Hopkin said: “They probably used them to get to the railway and catch a train.”

Thieves broke into cars to get their hands on loose change. Vehicles in Eight Acres, Dundale Road, Station Road, Minall Close, Rosebery Way and Hunters Close were hit and a handbag and satnav were taken in Dundale Road. On the same night intruders also broke in and stole cash and a purse at a home in Wingrave Road.

Mrs Hopkin said: “People are concerned about street lights being turned off, but currently this is being treated as a one-off and does not form an increased crime pattern.”

During the first three weeks of April, there have been 72 offences of vehicle crime - 18 more than for the same period last year.
