Organisers of this summer’s canal festival in Hemel Hempstead have announced that the event has been cancelled due to lack of bookings.
Not enough people have come forward to run stalls and pay for moorings at the annual event at Blackbirds Moor in Boxmoor.
The Wendover Arm Trust has made a decision to cancel despite calling for boaters to come forward and not be put off by current canal closures at a variety of locks on the Grand Union Canal.
British Waters had given the festival the green light and there were not going to be any canal closures.
The event from June 3 to 5 was supposed to launch the Jubilee celebrations and Cultural Olympiad in Dacorum but the festival committee decided to scrap the event during its meeting on Wednesday, March 28.
Festival chairman Graeme Lockhart said in a statement: “Water levels continue to be a major contributing factor in the lack of boat bookings. Also there are a lot of activities taking place on this Jubilee weekend.”
