Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning has been checking out a high-tech health firm which has chosen the town for its new headquarters.

Mr Penning visited the Marlowes offices of Heidelberg Engineering, a leader in light-based medical devices for ophthalmic applications, to see the advanced eye screening technology which the company designs, manufactures and markets.

After a tour of the head office and training centre for glaucoma detection and management, he took the opportunity to have his eyes scanned by the firm’s high-tech kit.

He was interested to learn more about the technology which is widely used by ophthalmologists, and growing in popularity amongst High Street optometrists, to aid the identification of the very first signs of eye disease.

He said: “This was a very interesting visit.

“I am delighted Heidelberg has chosen Hemel Hempstead for their new UK headquarters and national training centre.”

Heidelberg UK director Krysten Williams added: “As Mike is also minister for disability as well as our local MP, his visit was a great opportunity to discuss the effects of vision loss and the tremendous opportunities to reduce the cost of care needed through early detection and treatment.”
