Coming soon: Three major projects taking shape in Berkhamsted

Work has begun on three major building projects that line the main road that runs through Berkhamsted.

The construction of 21 houses and 33 flats in New Lodge, between London Road and Bank Mill Lane, is now well under way.

The building work is expected to be finished by May or June next year and a sales and marketing suite will open at the site in three months’ time.

The new development – to be called Royal Keys – has already attracted 23 buyers, 80 per cent of whom live in or near Berkhamsted.

Further down the A4251, where its name changes from London Road to the High Street, the building of 48 retirement homes is due to begin in March.

Businesses based on the plot of land near Stag Lane where they will be built have already moved elsewhere.

Developer Churchill Retirement Living expects the work to be completed within 12 months.

Managing director Andrew Burgess said: “We will be releasing selling prices later in the year.”

He said the firm hopes people will agree it has kept its promise of developing the area quickly and improving its appearance.

Then of course there is the construction of the new Marks & Spencer Simply Food store in the town centre.

It will form part of an extended complex from what used to be the town’s Royal Mail sorting office, and will include two other units for shops or restaurants.

Work on the site was due to be finished by spring – but is understood to be behind schedule and developers have been unable to confirm a completion date this week.
