A 21-year-old from Hemel Hempstead attempted to escape from the police by scrambling up a tree in Water Gardens on Saturday.
The man fled from Primark in the town centre at about 1.15pm after being suspected of shoplifting – but speedy police officers were hot on his heels.
The suspect then made his way to the Water Gardens where he took refuge in a nearby tree.
After a lengthy hang-out in the foliage, he was eventually coaxed down by police and firefighters, who used a raised platform to get to his lofty height.
The man was arrested at 4.15pm and taken to Hemel Hempstead Police Station.
