PUPILS dug in to plant 18 trees as they launched a new educational amphitheatre.

Children at St Bartholomew’s School in Wigginton joined their headteacher Julie Kemp and Simon Smith from The School Grounds Consultancy to celebrate the new feature.

The project costing around £20,000 also includes a new outdoor classroom. The school has raised around £6,000 so far.

Mrs Kemp said: “We will be able to further develop the teaching of different aspects of the curriculum by making greater use of the outdoor areas.

“Any contributions from local businesses would be very much appreciated.”

The extension of the school’s junior playground, which was launched on Monday, March 13, will be used for play-times, drama lessons, assemblies and a meeting place for sporting activities.

Mrs Kemp added: “We aim to encourage the children to gain a greater understanding of the environment and to adopt a more sustainable way of living to enable use to protect and improve the environmental world.”
