Fire crews rushed to Hemel Hempstead town centre this morning after reports of a building on fire, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Crews from Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley and St Albans were called at 10.09am to the scene at the former Jessops photographic store in the pedestrianised part of Marlowes, but quickly realised that it was just workmen who had accidentally activated a security fog device.

The Smoke Cloak acts as a deterrent against thieves by releasing smoke to ensure they cannot see what they’re stealing.

No further assistance from the fire service was required.
