A PROJECT that helps old and disabled people with their gardening has been given £24,000 to keep it going for another year.

Since September 2009 the Groundwork Herts Green Aiders has helped more than 150 people take back control of their gardens.

The scheme covers the Dacorum and Broxbourne areas and offers help to those who are unable to maintain their gardens or afford a gardener.

The funding has come from Herts County Council’s Community Wellbeing Fund.

Working on a volunteer basis, the initiative gives helpers the chance to improve social and communication skills by meeting new people and gaining confidence. Practical gardening skills and basic horticultural knowledge are also developed.

Spokesman April Cowen said: “The work is very important and is designed to get local volunteers involved, so it might mean someone just down the road is helping someone in their community.”
