Gym user dies after becoming ill at Hemel Hempstead’s Virgin Active

A gym user has died after becoming unwell while at Hemel Hempstead’s Virgin Active.

Paramedics raced to the plush Maylands Avenue leisure centre yesterday evening but were unable to save the man, believed to be aged in his 50s.

An East of England Ambulance Service Trust spokesman said: “We dispatched a rapid response vehicle, a community first responder and an ambulance.

“Sadly there was nothing that could be done for the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Police were also called to the venue but no investigation has been launched and the case has now been passed onto the coroner for Herts.

The leisure centre was closed for the rest of the evening but reopened for business this morning.

A spokesman for Virgin Active said: “We offer our deepest sympathies, and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.”
