Berkhamsted High Street has missed out on a national award that recognises the best, most enduring and improved urban environments.

The town centre made it through to the finals of the 2015 Great Street Urbanism Award under ‘The Great Street Award’ category but fell at the last hurdle on Friday.

The market town missed out to Bridge Street in Taunton, Somerset.

A spokesman for the competition said: “The vote was very, very close but unfortunately not this time around.”

The competition saw an assessment team take a tour of the High Street back in August, when the team judged the road on its character and amenities as well as how safe and enticing the area is for people.
