Stoke Mandeville Hospital has launched an investigation after missing elderly dementia patient Violet Burton was found dead.
Mrs Burton – known as Vi Ann – was reported missing from the hospital at 12.10pm on Monday.
After an extensive police search, the body of the 79 year old from Aston Clinton was discovered near to Lower Road in Stoke Mandeville at 11.48am yesterday (Tuesday).
Carolyn Morrice, chief nurse of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “We have been extremely saddened to hear of this news and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Mrs Burton’s family at this very difficult time.
“We do not currently have any further information; we are being kept informed by and are working closely with the police.
“We are also undertaking our own internal review.”
The pensioner had been cared for in the hospital’s dementia ward since the weekend of March 7 after she had been found wandering in Aston Clinton.
Mrs Burton was due to have an assessment from the county’s social services team, but was not yet under their care.
A spokesman for Bucks County Council said: “Our safeguarding team will be become involved in due course, but we cannot make any further comment on the case at this stage of the police investigation.”
