Australia’s blue-eyed boy Jason Donovan says he’s delighted to be performing especially for Tring at this summer’s Chilfest.

The former Neighbours star turn who has since developed his career as a musical theatre all-rounder as well as a popular DJ is set to headline the Saturday night of the three-day festival in July, and confirmed he’ll be belting out all the hits and more.

Jason, now 45 but still bouncy and boyish as he contemplates the gig, said: “I’m looking forward to giving audience the songs that they know and love.

“They’re from a period in their lives that holds a lot of memories for them.”

Sadly there’s little chance that Jason’s former squeeze Kylie Minogue making a guest appearance on stage for a rendition of their 1988 chart-topper Especially For You.

But he did confirm that he is hoping to sing the famous duet on the night, but remained tight-lipped on the identity of the female singer who will be joining him on stage. He said: “Anything could happen, but I doubt Kylie will be there. We’ll see how it goes.”

The professional entertainer who has enjoyed a varied career across the music, theatre and television industries and was recently headlining at Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre in a touring production of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert, has been adopted by the British public as one of their own.

He enjoyed a stint on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here back in 2006, where he finished in a respectable third place.

But the dad-of-three admits he hasn’t spent much time Down Under for the past three years.

He said: “You’ve got to go where the work is, and I believe that you create your own luck.

“You can’t just wave a magic wand – everything I do, I do with passion and I give it 100 per cent.”

His role as drag queen Mitzi Mitosis in Priscilla is one he cherished.

He said: “The show has been very good to me. It was a natural gravitation for me as I’d done stuff in the West End before.

“They asked me to audition like everyone else, but I think I was someone they were looking at very closely because I’m Australian, and I’m a singer.”

The musical has earned rave reviews around the world and has clocked up many an award.

Jason says these achievements are down the show’s niche quality in the theatre world.

He said; “It’s a modern musical – something a little bit different.

“People want more from a musical experience now, instead of regurgitated revivals of the same old shows.”

But how does Jason unwind when he’s not on stage or in front of a rolling camera?

He said: “I like to spend time with my family, watch TV, ride my bike, drink wine and have long lunches.

“My family are my highlight. My wife and children are right at the top of the list, no question.”

The pop icon had a message for the fans turning out to see him as Tring hosts the second Chilfest in a row.

He said: “This is a great opportunity to rewind a little bit, and to go back a few years to when they were younger.

“Music is a great communicator and a song can make a huge emotional impact when you listen to it. I will give the audience what they want.”

Chilfest organiser Steve Butcher said: “Jason is a huge household name with numerous top ten hits and an amazing theatrical career.

“He has a wide appeal across all age groups and I feel he will be a huge hit on the Saturday night.”
