Name of organisation:

Boxmoor & District Angling Society Ltd or BDAS for short.

What are your main aims and objectives?

To provide quality fishing for all the family, for all age groups, for all the Dacorum community and increasingly for the modern carp angler.

Where do you meet, and how often?

As a 12-strong management committee we meet monthly at Westbrook Mere between Bourne End and Robert Snook’s grave at Boxmoor, the Mere being a 3.5 acre former gravel working between the A41 and Grand Union Canal.

The club’s 325 members meet at the Mere, the Durrants Hill Road lakes in Apsley, or on the River Colne at Watford or on the Upper Great Ouse at Stoney Stratford. Fishing is available seven days a week, 365 days a year.

What sort of people are your members?

All ages, male and female, children, a few mums, teenagers, students, lots of dads, office workers, tradesmen and business owners. That’s the beauty of fishing. It takes all sorts!

If someone was considering membership, what would you say to them to convince them to sign up?

Quality local fishing on your doorstep. Open for business 24-7, 365.

Please give us an idea of your activities in the last six months and what do you have lined up for the future?

Fishing, fishing and fishing though we also co-ordinate and run the Dacorum Angling Project for disadvantaged youngsters in association with Herts Police and the charity Druglink.

We have just organised a community wide family fishing day in association with Tring Anglers as part of the annual National Fishing Month.

What sort of costs are involved in membership?

There’s a subscription form at www.bdas,org and, in addition to an initial one-off joining fee of £35, a basic annual adult sub is £60 a year. Then there are modest add on costs for night fishing or using a third rod. Junior fees are half rate. And new for this year is a family ticket.

Are you part of a national organisation or affiliated to a bigger group?

As a fishing club, BDAS is a member and major supporter of the sports governing body, the Angling Trust.

If someone would like to join, who should they contact?

Club membership secretary David Wiltshire: or secretary Gary Cullum at or 01442 233656.
