A tradition of Berkhamsted Lions Club is for its members to take its president out to a secret venue at the end of his/her year of office.
Lion president John Beach, dressed as the newly arrived William the Conqueror, and 20 fellow Lions visited Berkhamsted Castle for a tour of the castle and visitors’ room. Guides for the occasion were Jenny Sherwood and Paul Dottridge from Berkhamsted Local History and Museum Society.
The evening was rounded off with a coronation dinner at Berkhamsted Sports and Social Club. Chef Darren Griffiths prepared a medieval feast, complete with a roasted pig’s head, each course being introduced by a fanfare. ‘William’ was crowned King by ‘High Priestess’ vice president Jane Cresswell.
