Retail giant Amazon welcomed a visit from the mayor of Dacorum as part of his tour of businesses in the borough.
Councillor Gbola Adeleke was given a guided tour of the 450,000 sq ft fulfilment centre in Maylands, Hemel Hempstead, by the site’s general manager Henry Low.
The mayor enjoyed a behind-the-scenes peek similar to the one experienced by the thousands of guests who have signed up for the public tours of the centre that began in June.
Demand for the tours has soared since bookings opened this summer, with all dates for 2015 now fully booked and dates for 2016 now available.
During his tour, the mayor also learned about Amazon’s Career Choice Programme, an education programme that pre-pays 95% of tuition and associate fees for a range of nationally recognised courses.
The programme provides financial assistance for the Amazon team in Hemel Hempstead and the UK’s other fulfilment centres to complete vocational and technical certificates and qualifications.
General manager Henry Low said: “It was great to welcome the mayor to Amazon. We enjoyed showing him around the fulfilment centre, where he got to meet some of the team that are responsible for shipping products from right here in Hemel Hempstead to customers around the world.
“I hope he enjoyed his visit and I look forward to welcoming him back on a public tour next year.”
Councillor Adeleke added: “Amazon has been a fantastic addition to the business landscape in Hemel Hempstead since it opened its doors here in 2012 and I’ve really enjoyed visiting the centre to meet the team and see the great work that’s being done here.
“I was particularly impressed with the Amazon Career Choice Programme and think it’s a brilliant scheme offering great benefits to individuals who are looking to enhance their careers.”
