A war veteran who served in the Merchant Navy celebrated his 100th birthday today.
Friends and family threw Wally Colburn a party in the Royal British Legion club in Queensway, Hemel Hempstead, which was attended by Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning.
He was also treated to a coffee morning at which new Dacorum mayor Penny Hearn was a guest.
At his party, Wally was presented with an Arctic Star medal for his services to the Merchant Navy during World War Two, when he sustained shrapnel injuries which later caused his leg to be amputated.
Mr Penning said: “Wally is a friend and I want to congratulate him on his Arctic Star and his 100th birthday, from one proud Englishman to an English hero.”
