Planning boss: Welcome sign is oak-ay with me

PLANS are being hatched to create a new ‘welcome to Dacorum’ sign at the entrance to Hemel Hempstead from the M1.

Council bosses would like to see a low-stone wall built on open ground at the Breakspear Way roundabout with a series of artificial hills and a stand of seven oak trees to represent the oak leaves on the borough’s crest.

Stephen Holmes, cabinet chief for planning and regeneration at Dacorum Borough Council, said: “Wouldn’t it be nice to have oak trees there and a low stone wall with ‘welcome to Dacorum’?”

The move comes alongside plans to spruce up the town centre, create cycling routes and introduce electric car charging points.

Mr Holmes said he wanted to see action on improvements to the town centre.

“From now on is delivery,” he said. “Between now and the next election we must put bricks on the ground. It will be delivered.”
