Plans to scrap free parking in Tring ‘fanciful’

CLAIMS that a town’s free parking will be scrapped have been branded “fanciful” by a borough leader.

Dacorum Borough Council finance chief Nicholas Tiley said each year it asks officers to review parking charges.

Tring now has a free first hour of town centre parking. The Lib Dems carried out a survey on keeping it after the review.

Mr Tiley said: “Industry and retail in Tring needs a bit more help than elsewhere in the borough, so we give them a bit of an advantage.

“The people in the council cabinet are very passionate about retaining the free hour.

“I just think it is a fanciful, imaginary fight going on. It is cheap, political manoeuvring by the Lib Dems and it happens most years.”

Tring councillor Nick Hollinghurst, a Lib Dem, said it happens most years as officers often challenge the free hour at the town council’s yearly consultation.

He said: “We are very pleased the cabinet will once again support the free hour. Let’s hope the officers get the message and we do not go through this again.”
