Berkhamsted Town Council has waded into the row about an ‘ugly’ electricity substation that appeared next to the area’s railway station.

The structure – which is surrounded by metal, palisade fencing – was installed by Network Rail to step up the voltage needed to run trains.

The substation required ‘permitted development’ rather than full planning permission, so appeared without much warning.

Civic and amenity society the Berkhamsted Citizens Association described it as an ‘ugly monstrosity’. The town’s political leaders have now supported their objections.

Berkhamsted Town Council’s planning committee will write to Network Rail to ask if the substation might be moved to an alternative and less obtrusive location.

Minutes of the group’s recent meeting say: “Alternatively, a more appropriate and sensitive surround consistent with the arcaded wall brick might be used than the high fencing.”
