A charity that runs a refuge for women and children escaping domestic violence has handed over its service to a housing association.

On Monday Dacorum Women’s Aid gave the management of Sanctuary House in Hemel Hempstead to Hightown Praetorian and Churches Housing Association.

Charity chairman Lady Val Corbett said: “Our committee believe a purely volunteer management committee is now not the best model to run the refuge which has seen a rise in more complex cases as well as having to adhere to increasing administrative policies and procedures.”

Two employed support workers will be kept on and services, such as courses for women, will be run by Hightown with funding from Dacoum Women’s Aid.

However, the charity is expected to be dissolved later this year, when Hightown – which has operated a refuge in Stevenage for the last 11 years – will have to take over the funding.
