The niece of a woman whose handbag was stolen while she was laying flowers on her mother’s grave has branded the thief a ‘scumbag’.

She posted her thoughts on the members-only Everything Tring Facebook page after the crime was reported to police at about 12.30pm today.

She said: “Just had an email from my auntie to say that while she was tending to my nan’s grave, some scumbag has smashed her rear window and taken everything out of the car.

“My aunt had locked her handbag in the boot and set her car alarm – her handbag, cash and mobile were stolen.

“The possessions aren’t the issue – they can be replaced, but she is so shaken up. This has been reported to police, so take care if you are visiting the graveyard.

“Whoever it was could have been watching the area for opportunities.”

Police say the theft at Tring Cemetery in Aylesbury Road happened between noon and 12.30pm.

Spokesman Giles Cooper said: “The vehicle – a blue saloon car – was parked in the cemetery’s car park when the theft occurred.

“The offenders smashed a window of the car and stole a number of items. A black handbag and blue purse with red trim were stolen. These contained cash, debit cards and a Samsung mobile phone.

“Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Hertfordshire Constabulary via the non-emergency number 101, citing crime reference D3/14/233.

“Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Facebook-users say thefts from vehicles in the cemetery car park have also happened multiple times in the past.

One person said that thieves could be guessing that many people will leave valuables in their cars.

She said: “Either that, or more worryingly, they are parked up somewhere and are watching what we are doing.”
