International sandwich chain Subway has opened its 2,000th UK store in Hemel Hempstead – itself the fourth express lunch unit in the town.

The newest Subway is also Hemel Hempstead’s largest and takes up the end of the rapidly-developing Jarman Fields leisure complex, already home to popular restaurant names Frankie & Benny’s, Chiquito and Coast To Coast.

The Subway officially launched yesterday after serving in the new site for a number of weeks.

The store is the 12th in the region to be run by franchisee Chris Seymour, who is also behind the two eateries on Marlowes as well as the one in the town’sKier Park industrial site. Chris said: “It feels fantastic to have opened the 2,000th Subway store in the UK and Ireland.

“I’ve worked with the Subway brand for over 12 years now – my entire career – so my business has really grown with the brand.

“The brand has gone from strength to strength since we first came to Hemel Hempstead with the first store at the bottom end of Marlowes opened at the stat of 2009, and the second at the other end at the end of the same year.

“We opened our third in 2012 and this is our fourth – it is really popular in the town and we have had a big warm welcome. We are looking forward to having lots of families and children coming in from the XC Centre, and ice rink when it is up and running.”

Reaching the 2,000 store acrossthe UK and Ireland is a landmark for Subway, which boasts more than 43,000 locations in over 105 countries worldwide.

Area Development Manager for Subway UK and Ireland Greg Madigan said: “We are very happy and excited that the 2,000th store was in this area – it’s a very worthy place.

“The new leisure park and all the great offerings here will make it a great place for locals to eat, and we are really happy to be a part of that.

“Opening the 2,000th store in Hemel Hempstead is an exciting milestone for everyone involved in the brand in the UK and Ireland, and I am very proud of their achievements. What’s more, we have a strong pipeline of stores opening throughout 2015 in a variety of locations from high street to popular non-traditional locations.”

Empire Cinema and the town’s only ice rink – currently under renovation – remain at the Jarman Fields site with a new gym, Nando’s chicken joint and Hungry Horse pub also on their way in the coming months.
