A PUB should be allowed to replace its signs – but a nearby bank shouldn’t.
That was what members of Berkhamsted Town Council’s planning committee decided on Monday evening.
Britannia Building Society have applied to illuminate a sign at their number 222 High Street base.
But councillors said they would recommend Dacorum Borough Council refuse permission for the work, as signs are not legally allowed to be lit by internal bulbs in a conservation area.
Pub The George, of 261 High Street, applied for an illuminated sign too. Councillors backed this, as the sign would be lit up from a light outside the sign itself.
Councillor Laurence Handy liked the look of the plan. He said: “I spent a whole evening going round the town centre looking at pub lighting – but didn’t go inside any.”
