A 10-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital with life threatening injuries following a rush hour road accident in Hemel Hempstead.

The girl, who is a pupil at Hammond Academy, was hit by a black Volkswagen Touran on Cambrian Way shortly after 8.30am this morning.

Police closed the road and the youngster has been taken to a specialist trauma centre by the Herts Air Ambulance.

East of England Ambulance Service Trust spokesman Gary Sanderson, who attended the incident, said: “The young girl received life threatening injuries.

“Following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, she was flown direct to St Marys Hospital in Paddington, London for further care.”

A boy and a woman in the car involved were assessed by paramedics but did not need hospital treatment.
