Driving lorries is more than just a job for Kevin Gookey who has picked up an accolade that praises his commitment to the community.

Kevin, 46, has been driving for Hemel Hempstead-based Gist for eight years but does much more than take trucks from point to point.

Married with three children, Kevin, who is based at the Gist site in Three Cherry Trees Lane, helped set up visits to primary schools in the Hemel Hempstead area to teach road safety.

For that and other reasons, he has been named Motor Transport Fleet Driver of the Year title at coveted industry awards.

“We take a truck onto the school playground and teach the children about stopping distances and blind spots,” said Kevin, who also helps ensure the company’s 160 drivers are taxed and insured.

“The kids get really excited about the lorries. It helps them realise the size of the vehicle as well as speed awareness.”

Although he wasn’t sure whether it would be known if the schools work saved lives, his boss was sure it would.

Tom Darlington, site operations manager of logisitics at Gist said: “Kevin is a well respected and invaluable member of the Hemel team.

“Not only is he a fantastic driver, his role as a driver trainer, risk assessor and legal compliance expert add real value to our business.

“The work he does in the community visiting local schools to promote road safety messages to children has received brilliant feedback and I am sure will help prevent more people from being injured on our roads both now and in the future.”

Kevin received his award with a handshake and a “well done” from comedian and TV presenter Dara O’Briain, who compered the awards ceremony in London.
