Berkhamsted went down in their opening pre-season match of the campaign, after being punished for their defensive mistakes by Rovers from the Essex Senior League.

With Lewis Rodrigoe, Bekim Culaj and Dale Sears all unavailable, Berko boss Mick Vipond gave three newcomers a chance in defence.

Youngsters Jake Broome from Leverstock Green and Tom Hardy played the full-back roles with Ed Canham coming in at centre-back.

The first half was very even with the sides separated by a Billy Johnson goal, after a careless pass at the Canal End was intercepted by the Rovers front-man.

Berko spurned the chance to equalise in the second half when Josh Chamberlain was hauled down in the penalty area, with Connor Calcutt seeing his spot-kick saved.

Johnson doubled the lead when he was released by some slick passing, and the visitors also hit the post with a fierce shot from the right wing.

Player-manager Dan Trenkel then beat the offside trap and rounded off the scoring when the Berko defence was caught square.

Ashley Morrissey came close to netting a consolation for the Comrades, but he saw two fierce strikes well saved.
