Leverstock Green take heart from narrow Hoddesdon defeat

Leverstock Green were beaten 1-0 by a second half goal at Hoddesdon Town last night, but will be encouraged by a much-improved performance.

Green remain bottom of the SSML Premier Division, but they were very unlucky not to come away from something from their visit to Hoddesdon.

There were a couple of early chances for Levy – Jon Davies hit a shot from distance just wide in the opening minutes, and in the eighth minute Davies got his head to a cross from Mark Campbell but couldn’t direct it on target.

The home side had a good spell midway through the half. An unfortunate slip by Mark Shadbolt left Robbie Carroll through on goal, but he shot over the bar.

A minute later a shot from Ben Andreos was saved by Green keeper Dan Blacktopp, and then a fine cross-field ball from Andreos found Meshach Williams in space, but he too shot over the bar.

In the final minute of the half Connor Deadman broke forward and played in Glenn Thompson, whose shot was turned wide by keeper Reece Buck.

The second half was just as evenly-contested. Five minutes in Davies had a great chance when Buck mis-kicked the ball to him, but his shot was deflected wide, and five minutes later a Chris Cutler free-kick found the head of Davies, but he didn’t quite get enough contact on his header.

At the other end Hoddesdon had chances, but their shooting continued to be wayward. On 69 minutes Mark Broome cleared off the line after Blacktopp had rushed out of his goal.

But the game turned on a couple of errors in the 73rd minute. Firstly Hoddesdon gave the ball away in their own half to give Leverstock a chance to push forward, but a misplaced pass gave the ball back to Hoddesdon and a long ball forward caught Green side on the break.

Blacktopp saved from Jamie Brandon, who was through on goal, but the rebound fell for Andreos, who was able to slot the ball between the defenders on the line to score.

The Leverstock side continued to battle for the rest of the game, but couldn’t find an equaliser.
