Tring Athletic’s home league campaign got off to a poor start as they fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of Hanwell Town.

After an even first half ended 1-1, Athletic showed uncharacteristic defensive frailties in the second period, shipping a further three goals to finish a well beaten side.

Tring started strongly, and within the first few minutes there were two loud penalty shouts, but on both occasions the referee turned down the appeals.

However, the visitors took a surprise lead in the 14th minute when a routine free-kick was headed home from close range by Tom Duffy.

Hanwell almost doubled their lead as Charlie Baverstock’s free-kick pinged back off the post, but Tring bagged the equaliser after 29 minutes.

Sam Mitchell’s effort looked destined to be saved, but Hanwell keeper Keiran Jimmy made a mess of things and allowed the ball to squeeze into the net.

Two minutes later, Reon Thomas lobbed the keeper, only to be denied by a an acrobatic clearance.

Any hopes of a home victory were shattered in the 53rd and 54th minutes, however, when Thomas Jansons and Terry Smith fired shots past Mike Underwood.

With the visitors now firmly in the ascendancy, Duffy headed in his second goal of the game to wrap up the win.
