Tring Athletic shared a 2-2 draw with United Counties League side Northampton Spencer in a hot and sunny pre-season friendly.
It was an entertaining game with Athletic having the better of the early exchanges; they had two penalties, the first taken by Stuart King and the second by Greg Dear – but the visiting keeper saved both.
After Athletic had a number of chances without scoring, it came as no surprise when Northampton Spencer opened the scoring after a goalmouth scramble.
The lead lasted just 10 minutes, however, as King ran on to a through-ball and coolly slotted home.
Both sides put a lot of effort into the game under difficult conditions and it was Athletic who took the lead; another through-ball found Chris Vardy whose shot rolled in despite a touch from the keeper.
Northampton Spencer came back, however, and equalised following some neat approach play.
Elsewhere, Berkhamsted striker BJ Christie hit a hat-trick as the Comrades ran out 4-1 winners over Southend Manor.
Berkhamsted took a 13th minute lead when a ball from Josh Chamberlain into the path of Christie was thumped home for an emphatic finish.
Berko only had to wait four minutes for their second goal as Christie drove forward and struck the ball along the floor and into the corner from 20 yards.
With 23 minutes on the clock it was 3-0 to the visitors who were now threatening to run riot.
Christie was again played in behind a static Manor back line and he rounded the keeper before slotting the ball into the net for his hat-trick.
And 15 minutes before half-time it was 4-0 as Manor’s defence backed off, allowing too much space for Ash Morrissey to fire home from 20 yards.
Both teams made changes at half-time, and Manor pulled a goal back through Charlie Little with 20 minutes to go to reduce the arrears.
Meanwhile, Leverstock Green had a day to forget as they were beaten 5-0 at home by a strong Hendon side in their final pre-season game of the campaign.
It was a much better day for Kings Langley, however, as they recorded a thumping 6-0 victory over Tring Corinthians.
The SSML Premier Division campaign gets under way on Saturday, August 9, with all four of the Dacorum sides in action.
Tring start the season with a trip to London Colney, while Mick Vipond’s Berkhamsted side are away at Hadley.
Leverstock Green welcome Cockfosters to Pancake Lane, and Kings Langley – who were promoted from SSML Division One last season – get the campaign up-and-running with an away match at Colney Heath.
