A NEWLY-FORMED rugby team got off to the perfect start as they charged to victory in their first match.
Hemel Stags Ladies Team were triumphant as they recorded a 46-22 win at home to Southampton on Saturday.
The Pennine Way side were quick out of the blocks with a Hannah Casey try in the opening quarter.
That was soon followed by a fantastic run and try from Naomi Roycroft to extend the lead.
The team were working well together and an impressive combination of great passes to enabled Caz Davies to get her name on the scoresheet as well.
Southampton made an attempt to come back in the third quarter, but the Stags were able to dig deep and played some fantastic rugby to win convincingly.
Coach Pete Clarke praised his side’s performance.
He said: “I was really impressed with the level of skill and commitment from a team of ladies who have only been training for 5 weeks. They were a credit to the club.”
The result marked a milestone day in the history of the rugby league club, with the team being the first ladies team in 30 years to appear for the club.
Any women who want to join the club are welcome to attend training from 7pm until 8.30pm at Pennine Way in Hemel Hempstead every Thursday.
