Tring Athletic 0-1 Hendon

TRING Athletic enjoyed a useful pre-season workout against Ryman Premier Division side Hendon - eventually going down by a solitary goal.

The visitors showed their class by dominating proceedings during the first half and took the lead just before the 15 minute mark.

Athletic responded strongly after the break, however, and Julian Robinson’s side will count themselves unlucky not to have bagged an equaliser.

Despite being second best in the possession stakes early on, Tring kept their shape and defended well, preventing Hendon from creating too many chances.

The goal that ultimately separated the two sides arrived in the 14th minute and was a gift – a misunderstanding in defence allowing Sergio Manusio to run the ball into an empty net.

During the remainder of the first half, Tring keeper Mike Underwood was only forced to make one serious save as he dealt with a curling shot from a well-worked short corner.

Athletic had their moments at the other end, with Dave Whicker and Vinnie Iannone both trying their luck on goal.

Both teams made use of their substitutes during the second period, but it was the Tring changes which made the biggest impact as the side started to look more menacing.

Early on, Whicker won the ball in midfield and released Reon Thomas, but the striker could only drag his shot wide of the post.

Connor Waite came off the Athletic bench in the 59th minute, and the substitute was in the thick of the action straight awat as he headed Liam Connor’s inch-perfect cross over the bar.

Both teams were playing attacking football, but it was Tring who looked the more likely to get the next goal.

With three minutes to go, Robinson’s side came agonisingly close to forcing the equaliser as Tony Fields capitalised on a poor pass out of defence, but saw his shot bounce back off the post.
