The Berkhamsted ladies’ first team started the year in impressive form with a convincing 5-1 home win against St Neots.
The home team played some excellent hockey in the first half but could not find the opening goal, largely due to a fine goalkeeping display from St Neots’ 13-year-old goalkeeper.
But the breakthrough finally came just before half-time when Andrea Bettridge lifted the ball into the net from close range following a short corner.
The second half saw the ladies take control and goals from Ann Baxter, Claire Barrett Mold (2) and Harriette Holderness completed the scoring for Berko.
St Neots did manage a consolation goal, but the day belonged to Berkhamsted as they continue to push for automatic promotion at the end of the season.
Harriette Holderness was deservedly named player of the match for her determined attacking play.
Elsewhere, the table topping ladies’ second team came back from a goal behind to beat bottom of the league Hertford 4-1.
Hertford took the lead, but Berko hit back before half-time through Sophie Beard.
And the Berkhamsted side took control after the break to earn the win courtesy of a goal from Poppy Lloyd and two more from hot-shot Beard.
Player of the match was Sarah Brydon who marshalled the midfield and made regular forays into the D.
The victory consolidates Berko’s position at the summit of the division, four points clear of the chasing pack.
