Young fans enjoyed an exciting afternoon of rugby league with free chocolate Easter eggs when Hemel Stags played one of their biggest games of the season against London Skolars on Good Friday.

Club mascot Sammy Stag greeted nearly 100 children with boxes of the treats as they arrived to watch the Stags battle it out in Kingstone Press Championship 1.

It was a thrilling match, with Skolars eventually running out 27-24 winners – see report on page 78.

When asked what he thought about rugby league, 11-year-old fan Max said: “It is really exciting to watch such a fast and powerful game.

“The atmosphere is really good here today too; lots of cheering for both sides. It was good to meet Sammy Stag. I’m going to eat my crème egg very quickly!”

Stags, who have recently launched a Future Stars Programme which introduces variations of rugby league and dance to local primary school children, provide weekly training and coaching at Pennine Way, for children under the age of 16.

They also work with many secondary schools in and around Hemel Hempstead.
