Berkhamsted squash representative Grace Gear was on scintillating form as England swept to victory at the European U17 Team Championships in Lisbon.
The England team was made up of the top-three boys and top-two girls in the UK, and Grace demonstrated why she is seen as one of the rising stars of the sport – not dropping a single game in any of the matches she played in.
In the group stage, number one seeds England beat Scotland, Hungary, hosts Portugal and Germany to progress to the quarters.
They then met Denmark, who they beat to set up a clash with Ireland in the semis.
And the young England stars held their nerves to book their place in the final against second seeds, France.
Again they lived up to their billing as pre-tournament favourites, showing their class to emerge victorious and bring home the trophy.
Meanwhile, Berkhamsted’s Angus Gillams and Joe Green have recently completed a tour of South Africa, with both acquitting themselves very well.
Joe was unlucky to be handed some tough draws, while Angus got to the final of all three events he competed in but didn’t manage to get his hands on a trophy.
Not one to dwell on the disappointment, Angus then travelled straight to the Las Vegas Open where he recorded one of his best wins to date – beating Mohamed Reda from Egypt (world ranked 70).
Angus was eventually knocked out in the quarter-final stage of the event but will have learnt plenty from the experience.
