Simon Hrbek went over for a hat-trick of tries to help Hemel Stags to a 34-30 Kingstone Press League 1 victory over the University of Gloucestershire All Golds at The Prince of Wales Stadium.
Hrbek went in for his opening try of the afternoon in the third minute and Ben Young added the extras before the All Golds hit back through a Yannic Parker try and a Matt Bradley conversion.
James Woodburn-Hall went over next, with another Young goal reclaiming the lead for Stags, but again the hosts hit back to level the scores with Bradley converting Steve Parry’s try.
Phil Cowburn then gave the All Golds their first lead of the game and Bradley converted but the Stags ensured the teams went into the break level at 18-18 thanks to another Hrbek try and Young kick.
Hrbek and George Flanagan went in after the break, with Young’s fourth goal giving the Stags a 28-18 lead.
But back came the University of Gloucestershire with tries from Chris Vitalini and Mark Bowen, and two Bradley goals putting them two points up.
The Stags, though, won it five minutes from the end when Mike Stewart went in and Young added his fifth goal of the afternoon.
