It was party time at Hemel Hempstead Town CC on Friday evening as the club retained their Heath Park Cup crown by beating Watford Town in the final of the Adex-sponsored T20 competition.
Hemel won the toss and batted first, making 150-5 in their 20 overs. Top of the order was the key to their success, with Brett Penny hitting 35, Sam Jenkinson adding 22 and Jack Doodson top scoring with 58.
Doodson’s swashbuckling innings contained eight fours and two sixes, and was good enough to earn him the man of the match award for the second successive year. For Watford, Ravi Panchal took 2-20 and Tahir Afridi snared 2-33.
With that target in mind, Watford made the worst possible start by losing Gunjan Hazarika in Billy May’s first over.
Tight Hemel bowling ensured that Watford were always on the back foot and only Obbad Shahid (36) and Tahir Afridi (33) made meaningful double figure scores. Opener Yogesh Pujari looked impressive but then ran himself out having made it to 11.
Hemel’s opening bowlers, Billy May (2-33) and Steve Reader (1-36), restricted Watford to 70-4 at the halfway 10-over point. Then Brad Finch (4-21) and Brett Penny (2-18) ran through the Watford lower order in three overs each as Watford were bowled out for 110 in 16.3 overs.
Adex MD John Latimer presented the cups, medals and plaques to the players, umpires and scorers before the celebrations began.
