Hertfordshire Stags 22 Eastern Counties 5

Hertfordshire Stags will play Kent in the final of The London & South East section of The National U20 Divisional Rugby Championship after a hard fought semi-final win over Eastern Counties.

Herts started brightly on a sunny afternoon at Old Merchant Taylor’s Memorial Ground in Northwood, and a 40 metre penalty by Dan Watt gave them a fifth-minute lead.

That was followed in the 13th minute by a try from winger Mitchell Henry, and the Herts domination continued with forwards and backs working together to produce a second try in the 23rd minute by centre Rory Day. This was converted by Watt.

Both sides then produced exciting forward and back play, but the game reached half-time without any further score.

After the half-time break, the Eastern Counties forwards started to put pressure of the Herts try-line for long periods.

The Herts team responded with a spirited and solid defensive effort, but Eastern Counties finally crossed the line with a score from Mike Ayrton.

Herts were not to be denied a spot in the final, though, and the side hit back in the dying moments of the game with a James Sonner try to secure the win.
