The Hertfordshire darts team threw away a 14-13 lead as they eventually suffered a 22-14 defeat to Gwynedd on the Isle of Anglesey.

Herts went into the clash sitting in a promotion spot in third place in the Inter-Counties Darts Championship Division Three table, but the defeat saw them slip down to sixth.

The Herts ladies got off to a reasonable start on the first day of play, with Boxmoor’s Louise Pearson winning her individual clash 3-2 as the team earned a 3-3 draw overall.

With the scores locked, the men’s game was also a tight affair and, despite Boxmoor representative Steve Hartley slipping to a 3-2 loss, the contest finished 6-6 – meaning the two teams were tied at 9-9 overnight.

The ladies were first up again on Sunday, and this time Herts proved too strong for their Gwynedd counterparts, winning 4-2.

With a 13-11 lead, it was left to the Herts men to try and finish off the job, but Gwynedd responded well and quickly began to claw back the deficit.

Boxmoor’s Leigh Purkis went down 4-2, and that set the tone for the remainder of the match as Gwynedd cruised to an 11-1 win to put them 22-14 up overall,

That, plus three bonus points, gave the hosts a 25-14 victory overall and left Herts to lick their wounds.
