TRING Rugby Club lost out 26-38 to Hertford in a high-scoring end-of-season encounter at Cow Lane.
Visitors Hertford opened the scoring with a penalty but Tring hit back to take a 12-3 lead courtesy of tries from Richard Roberts and Tim Loughnan - one of which was converted by James Fouracre.
Hertford responded with a try of their own, as well as another successful penalty kick, to narrow the deficit to just one point but Fouracre ran over a third try for Tring which he converted to give his side a 19-11 lead.
Hertford grew in confidence as the second half progressed, though, and after a yellow card for Fouracre the away side bagged two further tries to take the lead at 23-19.
With the game flowing from end to end, it was Tring who scored next courtesy of a converted Tom Newton effort, but Hertford replied with another two tries to open up a nine-point advantage.
And despite the hosts’ best efforts, the away side added a late penalty to their total to secure the hard-earned victory.
The defeat means Tring finish the season in 10th position in the league table, one point behind ninth-placed Staines.
Barnes end the campaign as champions having won 24 of their 26 league matches, while Diss prop up the table in 14th place.
