A YOUNGSTER from Little Hay finished in first place at the Dunstable Downs Golf Club Junior Open.
George Rocca, 12, played in the U14 category and shot an impressive net 66 to win not only his age group, but beat the whole field of 50 U18 players to take the overall title.
George has been a member of Little Hay Golf Club for a little over two years and now plays regularly in the club’s competitions and matches against other clubs.
Recently, he has taken lessons from PGA coach Lee Jordan at Little Hay and at the Hertfordshire County Academy, and he has been flourishing on the course as a result.
Elsewhere, juniors shot the best three scores in the final round of the 9 hole stableford Summer League on Wednesday.
Continuing his impressive form, Rocca scored 22 points, while Robbie McIvor and William Howe each scored 21.
However, the overall result was decided on the best four scores from six games and it was Jamie McIvor who kept his head and played steadily to win the title with 80 points.
Second was Alan Freeman with 77 and third was Mike Reader with 75.
In other action, the men’s team recorded a 210-201 win over Batchwood in the Herts Friendly League, while the seniors beat Wycombe Heights 4-2 and the juniors triumphed 13.5-1.5 over Ashridge in the Herts Junior League.
In the seniors’ monthly Stableford competition, Paul Whiter emerged victorious in Division One, while Fred Evans won Division Two. Elaine Meagher won the ladies’ competition,
The Junior Medal competition, meanwhile, ended in t three-way tie on net 66.
Aquib Raja eventually took the title on countback, ahead of on-form Rocca and Robbie IcIvor.
