Four-time Olympic gold medallist Greg Louganis certainly made a splash as he paid a visit to youngsters at Dacorum Diving Club.
The American, who is widely regarded as the greatest diver of all time, dropped in at Sportspace Hemel Hempstead to pass on tips and advice to the fledgling divers.
“The most important thing at this level of diving is to have fun and enjoy yourself,” Louganis said. “It’s a great physical activity and you can really address your fears and challenge yourself.”
The Californian is in Britain as part of his role as athlete mentor for the USA Olympic diving squad, and he said he was impressed by the way London has catered for the Games.
“The facilities are beautiful in London,” he said. “I think that the city is doing an incredible job as hosts.”
He added: “The British divers have done a great job – they have come a long way since I was competing and have made great improvements.”
Dacorum Diving Club were understandably thrilled by Louganis’ appearance at the pool, and head coach Roger Page said: “It meant the world to the kids to be inspired by the greatest diver of all time.
“It was a great boost to the kids and the club.”
